A Giveaway, Sweet Memories and My Box

It's hot again! I keep reminding myself it's mid-October! I have my cute pumpkin on the middle landing of the stairs where we see it every time we go up or down. I made it this year and really like how it turned out. Even Mark commented on how cute it is. LOL

I found another giveaway! This is from dear sweet Debi's blog Life in My Studio. She is celebrating her birthday by having a Birthday Giveaway! TO DIE FOR!

Sneak peek!

But there's more. But you'll have to go over and see for yourself. Stay awhile and read back on her blog. You'll be so glad! it is a very fun place to visit.

I have had the best weekend.  It all started yesterday morning . . .

My oldest son is going to be staying with us for a few days and I figured I needed to provide him with some closet space. So I . . . went in to his room (formerly my office, yeah I know, I moved it again, I'm back at my old space, I wanted the computer closer to me in the studio - I rearranged my entire studio . . . long story - more on that another day) I went into his room and started in on the closet. It was where I kept all my filing and paperwork. When I pulled it all out - there sat my Hope Chest. For years it was filled with things I would use someday when I married, then for when I had my first child. Now it is filled with . . . I couldn't quite remember.

So I opened it up. And slowly began pulling each item out to hold and go back in time to whatever had happened with that particular piece to make me want to save it and give it a special place of honor in my Hope Chest.

My books. I had totally forgotten I still had them.
All summer I'm looking for these books in Antique Stores
across the country, and I had them safe at home all along.
What is wrong with me that I didn't remember I still had them?

Special pillowcases my Grandma embroidered for me.

All the notes to the Advent Tree I made my Mom for her last Christmas.
(I am going to share this fun craft with you very soon!)

All of my Girl Scout things - from Brownies on up through Cadettes.

My Mom's baby things . . .

A gown . . .

The detail work is amazing . . .

Her delicate little bonnet . . .

Another bonnet . . .

One of her baby blankets - with her beautiful handwriting on the note.

But best of all? This . . .

I remembered my Mom showing me this book back when we moved her from our home we'd always lived in to her new home much closer to where my sister and I lived. But what I didn't remember was that she gave it to me. But . . . it is sooooooo special, you'd think I would remember such a thing. I wonder if she placed it in there and didn't tell me, knowing I'd find it again someday? I have literally MOURNED for it, because of all the special treasures that are inside. I've thought for years that she must've accidentally given it to the GoodWill after her garage sale was done. And to find it again - I just laughed and cried, and cried some more. What's inside? Ahhhh, that's a story for another day. This post is turning out to be quite long enough.

Finally - I finished my box. I am so pleased with how it turned out.

It started out as this . . . it is the PERFECT size!

And now it looks like this. Vintage lace and flowers . . .

An old clip-on rhinestone earring I just LOVE . . .

A perfect fit! Sigh. What fun!

The entire time I was finishing it, I was thinking of a special person who just might make a journal too. (you know who you are! I hope you do it now that you have some goodies!)

Well I hope everyone else is having a wonderful weekend too!

Hi Karen....first of all, I have my mom's scrapbook. It is full of cards from her shower and wedding. I treasure it. It looks almost the same as your mom's except it is golden color.
Secondly, that pumpkin is really cute. Still cannot find that blog. Anyways....Your box turned out so lovely....I have some questions on how to start the journal...but I will email you. Hope you are having a great Sunday.

I, like Ceekay, am wondering how you made the journal, not so much the beautiful embellishments, but turning the box into a book. I have heard about them, but yours is the first I've seen and I am in LOVE with it. What an awesome job you did!!

Going through your hope chest was so much fun (maybe I am too nosy! lol!!). I'd love to have one. I have all sorts of treasures up on a shelf in my closet to be organized. Some things are so special I don't want to just stick them in a plastic bin. But I may be a bit too old for a hope chest!!

Thanks for the tip on a giveaway. I always love to visit new blogs.

Have a wonderful Sunday, Karen!!

I just loved all the pics you shared with us. Where are you going to be in Michigan? I'm not that far you know. I hope it's Mackinac Island because I'll be there is a heartbeat. Hugs, Cindy

Karen, Thanks for all the encouraging words at my blog page. I love the treasures you "found". I am sure we all have treasures tucked away that we will come across at the perfect moment, when we need to find them. Makes me want to look thru some boxes in the attic. :)

Hello Karen,
What a wonderful story about all your sentimental items. My mom did toss out my dad's old scrapbook and I'm still grieving that today! Your box is just lovely - doesn't it just make you happy to create something like that. Thank you for stopping by and leaving such a nice note on my blog today. You asked about the swaps... I am in five of them and this is my first time at Silver Bella! I got a little ambitious and now am paying for it as I didn't work fast enough to get these done earlier. But, it always gets done under pressure. :-)
Have a great week,

Karen - found your blog a little while ago -looked through some of your other posts - really enjoyed it. Your own double doors are so gorgeous--they are very special even without decorations, I'm sure. You did have a wonderful weekend - just the kind I really would enjoy too. Love your mother's little baby shoes and I'm eager to know what is in that lovely old scrapbook. So, I will be signing up as a follower (if my follower thingy works, it has been acting crazy lately). If not, I'll come back later to do that.

Come see me at my new blog, Beauty and Blessings, when you have a moment.

What a wonderful time to have to go through your "hope chest." Through all of that hope love and memories were made. I can only imagine how you felt finding your mom's scrapbook and touching her baby things, truly monumental.

what treasures you found. isn't it fun to find things you had forgotten about? i wish i had old family heirlooms. as far as i know, nothing much was kept from my grandparents and beyond.

Old items saved by a loved one always give us a closer look at someone we always thought we knew, they are just "things" but they become treasure in time. How lucky that your mom kept them all.
the box is beautiful!
